Understanding the "LMD" system

A new degree system was created in Europe back in 2004, according to the 3, 5, 8 approach, in order to standardise degree courses:

The bachelor’s degree is conferred upon the completion of 3 years of study subsequent to the baccalaureate.

The master’s degree) is conferred upon the completion of 5 years of study subsequent to the baccalaureate.

The doctorate (PhD) is conferred upon the completion of 8 years of study subsequent to the baccalaureate.

(the baccalaureate is the final secondary school examination before going on to university (equivalent to an "A-Level").
